Cape Gooseberry is also known as Physalis and is a tall growing plant of up to 2 metres high. The perennial plant produces star shaped flowers in July and August which are then followed by green cyclos which turn bright orange-red when the fruits are ripe. They are delicious when eaten raw or can alternatively be made into a delicious jam. They also make a beautiful garnish for desserts to show off to your friends and family.

Where to Sow
Under glass sow seeds on the surface of a good quality seed compost and lightly cover the seed with vermiculite at a temperature of 18-21°C
What to do Next
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual 9cm (3in) pots and grow them on at a minimum temperature of 15°C until they are 20cm (8") tall. Transplant into larger containers or growbags and grow under glass or once all risk of frost has passed move containers outside to a sunny patio.

Handy Tip
Plants can look attractive grown in large containers on a sunny patio. Once plants start to produce flowers, feed once a week with a high potash tomato food to encourage the small fruits to develop.
